Kicking off November, it is time to sign up for our Give Kids A Smile program. This will be our second annual event and our team will be carefully planning a day of free care to those in need.
Last year, we were a proud host site and helped the American Dental Association Foundation in their nationwide Give Kids A Smile Day to raise awareness of the unmet oral health needs of children in our community. The first goal of our participation was to provide quality comprehensive oral care to local children that included exams, oral hygiene instructions, radiographs, cleanings, fluoride as well as necessary dental care such as fillings and extractions. After children received dental treatment, their parents were educated about treatment provided, oral health care tips, additional treatment needs, as well as counseling about public assistance programs available for their family.
Overall, we had 54 children enroll in the program and 43 presented for care on the date of the program with an overall attendance rate of 79%. The value of dental services provided for the children was around $28.900. Southwest Kids Dentistry team also donated follow-up care for those with extensive treatment needs with an estimated value of $ 5,400.
We could not have had such a successful event last year without the help of our 28 volunteers including 2 pediatric dentists, 3 general dentists, 1 hygienist, 10 dental hygiene students, 8 dental assistants, and 4 technical support members. Our community partner who helped with logistical organization was Arizona Dental Foundation. We also are very thankful to our sponsors including:
Gold Sponsors: Dr. JAW Orthodontists, Southwest Kids Dentistry
Silver Sponsors: Arizona Healthcare Realty, Benco Dental, and GC America
Bronze Sponsors: Legacy Smiles of Southern Arizona, Whole Foods Market, Henry Schein
If you know someone who would like to donate their time or financial support to making a tremendous impact for our community's pediatric oral health, please call us today. Our upcoming Give Kids A Smile Event will be held in February 2017 so look for more details in the coming months. School nurses are encouraged to assist us in enrolling children in need.
