ABOUT:

Give Kids A Smile Day is an annual event held nationally at a variety of clinical sites across the country and organized in part with the American Dental Association Foundation.

This day of free dental care not only acts to provide at-risk children with needed oral health services but also raise awareness that children's dental health coverage is inadequate to meet the level of need that exists.

In 2016-2018 Give Kids A Smile Tucson site was held at Southwest Kids Dentistry, a site with 9 clinic chairs. In 2016, the event provided over $28,900 of free dental care to 43 children in Tucson and in 2017 that number was increased to $35,900 of free dental care to 60 children. In 2018, the event provided $49,595 in free care to 70 children- and due to demand, the event has outgrown the Southwest Kids Dentistry site. In 2019, the program grew and graduated to the Pima Community College, where 124 children were seen and we hope to continue to grow and serve more children in the Southern Arizona community.

In Arizona, 1 in 3 children has dental decay by age 3. Untreated tooth decay can lead to pain, infection, hospitalization, emergency room visits, and lower school performance. Since tooth decay is largely a preventable disease, getting children both preventive dental care and access to treatment remains a challenge that needs to be addressed by our state and national policymakers.

The 2020 Give Kids A Smile evet at Pima Comunity College will aim to treat at least 100 children as part of the national movement. Space for treatment is limited and not everyone will receive treatment as treatment is provided by local dental professionals on a volunteer basis. If you lack dental coverage and your child needs dental care, please sign up (registration will open in January 2020)! Once the interest form is completed, a Give Kids A Smile Volunteer will contact you. Our pre-registration volunteer team is headquartered at Southwest Kids Dentistry- so pay attention to your caller ID if you see us call!

If you are a local dentist or dental team member and would like to volunteer, please register online here! CE credit is available to those interested.

If you would like to donate to our event, we would be happy to accept any and all donations- call Penny at Arizona Dental Foundation at 1-480-344-5777 x325. Our Tucson Give Kids A Smile information phone number for patients is 520-367-3454.

If you are a member of the press, we would love to spread the word about the need to expand children's dental benefits in Arizona so all children receive the dental care they deserve for a happy, healthy life.
